Exosomes as mediators of the early embryo-maternal communication in the oviduct

In this project my interest moves towards understanding a new way of embryo-maternal communication mediated by exosomes. Exosomes are small membrane-vesicles secreted from a variety of cell types, among them the endometrium and the oviduct, which can shed microRNA and proteins to target cells and can influence or perform processes in the recipient cells. Therefore, we address the question of whether exosome release by the oviduct is affected by female hormonal status or is under the influence of the embryo. The characterization and isolation of oviductal-derived exosomes under hormonal/embryo stimulation will extend our understanding of the early embryo-maternal communication with potential impacts on infertility.

Biography & research interests

I graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Murcia (Spain). My fascination with reproductive science began while I was an undergraduate student at the Animal Reproduction research group in the University of Murcia during my Veterinary degree. At the time, I did not know that my interest in reproductive biotechnologies and in particular, my immense curiosity in the first week of the embryonic development would develop into a career choice. I joined the Animal Reproduction research group to develop my Doctoral thesis focused on optimizing the in vitro production of pig embryos. Afterwards, my research interest moved on to further understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible of the cross-talk between the embryo and the maternal tract. I performed two postdoctoral stays at the University of Sheffield (UK). These postdoctoral stays have allowed me to identify key factors of the maternal-embryo dialogue, while I was trained in different molecular biology techniques and systems biology.

During my research career, I have always kept a continuous training both in applied science, optimizing several reproductive biotechnologies, as well as in basic science, identifying the factors that are involved in the maternal-embryo interactions. I am interested in projects that translate the research from “the bench to the bedside”. My last postdoctoral project aimed to study the impact of different reproductive biotechnologies, such as embryo cryopreservation and embryo transfer, on the uterine receptivity at the genomic level in order to improve the pregnancy rates in sows.

Currently, and thanks to the AgreenSkills program, I am working on a new way of embryo-maternal communication mediated by exosomes.
